Rebecca Jones

I love to drink a lot of tea, stare out of my studio window and draw and paint the imaginary creatures that wander by.

Where do you live?
Melbourne, Australia

Where have you lived?
Birmingham, Winchester and London in the UK

What medium do you use?
A little bit of everything – pencil, pen and ink, watercolour, acrylic and my computer

How do you stay inspired?
By walking in the botanical gardens or on the beach. By browsing local bookshops, going to craft markets, and reminiscing about my childhood. And I have many, many books which provide an endless source of inspiration.

Where do you buy your art supplies?
From my local art shop. I also love Jetpens.com

What color combination are you most excited about right now?
I find it hard to do anything without using aquas and mint. I am currently loving mint with golden yellow, peachy pink and navy.

What blog(s) do you read?
Lots of creative and design blogs that I stumble upon accidently, but some of my main go to’s are printandpattern, thedesignfiles, loveprintstudio, ohjoy.

Why do you like being an illustrator in 10 words or less?
Being able to create a moment of magic

If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
A pâtissier. I just love baking (and eating!) sweet things. And I love how beautiful and intricate pâtisserie cakes can be. As a child I would make cakes out of paper, paint and sticky tape and pretend I had my own cake shop. I also would have loved to have worked with animals.

What illustration job would you love to get (your dream job)?
A collection with Land of Nod, and I would just love to illustrate a children’s book.

Name something you do in your spare time.
Go for coffee, bake, make ice cream. Visit exhibitions, shop, and eat.

What’s the strangest work experience you’ve ever had?
Not sure….I did some work experience when I was at high school as a chambermaid in a hotel – that certainly opened my eyes to a few things!

What are you reading now?
Nothing at the moment

What recent book do you recommend for a good read?
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, all about the life of Hadley Richardson, Ernest Hemmingway’s first wife. I found it fascinating, hard to put down, and very emotional.

Where would you like to travel to next?
Scandanavia, Chile or New York

What’s your favorite TV show?
Mad Men. And I do love a bit of Downton Abbey too.

What movie have you seen several times?
Two of my absolute favourites are Dangerous Liaison and The Royal Tenebaums

Who is your favorite cartoon character?
Top Cat

Who are you in “The Office”?
In the English version, maybe Dawn?

What is your favorite cheese?
I love all cheese, but especially Brie.

Do you wear shoes when you do art?
No

What do you listen to while you work?
It varies depending on my mood, sometimes nothing at all, sometimes I like to have the television on in the background just to listen to, and I’m always in the mood for a bit of Iron and Wine.

What artist are you reincarnated from?
Well I wish I was reincarnated from Henri Matisse – his colours and paintings are just stunning.

What’s your middle name?
Jane

What do you wish your middle name was?
Araminta. It was the name of a girl in a children’s TV show in the UK called Moondial. My brother and I used to watch it together back in the eighties. I thought it was the most beautiful, magical name.

you could eat only one food, what would it be?
My Dad’s Sunday roast. Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish sauce and Brussel sprouts etc. I rarely get to eat it these days, and for that reason alone I think, it has gained legendary status in my mind. Or my Mum’s lemon meringue pie. That is beyond compare.

How do you stay in shape?
I live in a townhouse, and we have 4 levels. My studio is right on the top floor. I feel like I spend a large proportion of the day running up and down the stairs! I love doing Yoga too, but don’t do it as much as I should.

How don’t you stay in shape?
I bake and eat way too many cakes and biscuits.

How do you take your coffee?
Strong and Melbourne style. Ask any Melbournian and they will tell you that we have the best coffee in the world, and I certainly think we do. Coffee is taken pretty seriously here!

Whom would you like to meet?
Stephen Fry

What recent illustration job have you enjoyed doing?
I have recently designed my first fabric collection, something I have always wanted to do.
